2017 Recipient: Mark Linsky (GA)
I am sincerely honored to have been selected for the 2017 SCOLT Leadership Award! I am grateful for the recognition by my colleagues engaged in the art of educating. It has been a pleasure to work among the enthusiastic and brilliant members of our profession. I attended my first SCOLT conference in Savannah in 1998 and I recall being captivated by the presenters' wisdom, innovative ideas, and the wonderful sense of shared purpose that was lacking since I was the sole teacher in my school. Because of these experiences, I was inspired to improve my practice. Additionally, I recognized the importance of collaboration, cooperation, and coordination with my peers that provided me direction on my professional journey. I must express my gratitude to my family members for their love and sacrifice, my students for forging me into an effective teacher, my peers for their comradery and encouragement, the Savannah-Chatham County School system for encouraging me to become a leader in world languages, and my state organization (FLAG) for their exceptional support.
2015 Recipient: Pam Benton (FL)
John Quincy Adams said, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." These words are particularly meaningful to me as I am humbled and honored to be the first recipient of the President's Award for Leadership at SCOLT's 50th Anniversary Celebration in Atlanta. It seems like yesterday that I attended my first SCOLT conference and was dazzled by the inspiring presentations and speakers. I have loved being part of the awards ceremonies, Leadership Luncheons, the Teacher of the Year competition, and presenting and attending workshops. Networking at SCOLT has led to improvements to our practices in Florida, wonderful keynote speakers at the Florida Foreign Language Association (FFLA) conference and continuous regeneration with fresh ideas for my personal teaching and the learning of my students. SCOLT has helped me learn and grow as an educator and as a leader. I have been inspired by my experiences at SCOLT and I hope to continue to strive to help others find inspiration to dream, learn, do and become more. Thank you for this honor.
